Johnson and Rivera co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), providing housing and advocacy for homeless trans youth and drag queens. Early LGBTQ culture was not neatly divided; gay bars were safe havens for gender-nonconforming people, and “gender deviance” was often conflated with homosexuality in medical and legal systems.
The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement didn’t start in boardrooms; it started in the streets, led largely by transgender women of color. Figures like and Sylvia Rivera were at the forefront of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. At the time, the distinction between "gay" and "transgender" was less rigid in the public eye—everyone who defied traditional gender and sexual norms was grouped together.
Sexual orientation (who you are attracted to) and gender identity (who you are) are fundamentally different concepts. Melding them into a single political bloc has occasionally led to misunderstandings, where trans issues are mistakenly treated as secondary to gay and lesbian issues.
